01.

The NHL and ESPN approached Beyond Sports to pioneer the first-ever live alternative broadcast. The NHL had two goals: firstly, to unlock business opportunities by leveraging its wealth of puck and player tracking data; and secondly, to create a never-seen-before experience that would inspire and excite new and existing ice hockey fans to spend more time engaging with the sport.

Objective

02.

Beyond Sports delivered the NHL Big City Greens Classic in a first-of-its-kind live animated alternate broadcast. By integrating the NHL’s puck and player tracking data with our 3D visualization technology, we transformed live footage into a fully animated experience featuring characters from the hit Disney series Big City Greens. Our technology made it possible to broadcast a seamless, near real-time 3D virtual recreation of the game simultaneously (>1 second delay) on ESPN+, Disney Channel, Disney XD, and Disney+.

To capture the distinctive look and feel of the Big City Greens IP, we developed a fully custom 3D environment that reimagined the characters in the virtual world through detailed modelling and animation, enhancing the data to improve movement fluidity and realism. To further enrich the virtual experience—and deliver new commercial potential—we integrated dynamic sponsorship placements, including branded props and animations, creating an additional revenue stream for the NHL and ESPN within the broadcast.
